Kenesset Israel Torah Center Summer Shabbat Lunch & Lecture Series

Join Kenesset Israel Torah Center and Rabbi Joel Zeff for a Shabbat lunch and lecture series. These four thought-provoking talks and light kiddush lunches follow services at around 11:30am (services begin at 9am). This program is free and open to the public. No prior registration is required.

The Inner Torah: The Study of Torah as Self-Discovery, May 14
We examine a famous Talmudic teaching suggesting that the acceptance of the Torah at Mt. Sinai was coerced by the threat of the mountain being dropped on their heads. We will re-read this text and generate a profoundly relevant insight in the nature of our Jewishnesss and our relationship with Torah. A “must" analysis for any serious grappling with the meaning of Judaism.

The Ultimate Déjà Vu: Reincarnation in Jewish Thought, June 18
Is there a doctrine of reincarnation in Judaism? Need I believe in reincarnation to be a “good Jew”? What would be the purpose of reincarnation? Join us for an exciting and meaningful Jewish exploration of a topic which has fascinated mankind for thousands of years.

Its All in the Stars- Is Astrology Kosher?, July 23
Every newspaper has an astrology column and a recent president of the United States was rumored to have made decisions influenced by astrological considerations. Indeed, astrology is featured in every strata of Jewish sacred literature from the Bible to the Talmud and up to contemporary writings. Join us as we explore fundamental issues of the veracity and “kashrut” of astrology.

Zionism, the Holiness of the Flesh, and Rabbi Kook, August 13
Rabbi Abraham Isaac HaKohen Kook was unique in his supportive stance towards Zionism, in spite of his ultra-Orthodox background and the largely non-traditional nature of the Zionist movement. We will analyze a short essay wherein Rabbi Kook compares the return to the Land with a demand to return to an appreciation of our bodies. Join us for this breath-taking exploration of “Kabbalistic  Zionism."

(Note: All classes will take place at KITC, 1165 Morse Ave., Sacramento. Unless otherwise noted, all classes are free. For more information, phone the KITC office at 916-481-1159)
